February 19:
Join us as we celebrate Black History month with the Department of Information Technology & Telecommunications (DoITT).  DoITT will be hosting a number of events that will promote and celebrate diversity in Information Technology and in the workplace.  This year's Black History month theme is "Excellence in IT" and the keynote speaker is Mr. Cecil McMaster, a CIO and top African American IT professional for the City of New York.  Logistics are Tuesday, February 19, 2008 from 12:30-2:00 pm at 59 Maiden Lane, on the 14th floor, which is the site of NYC 's 311, one of DoITT's largest divisions.  For additional information about DoITT, go to www.nyc.gov/html/doitt/home.html. Randall Mosby, MOMA's Manager of Network Services, will share with members his key role in implementing the museum 's  internal network and technology upgrade.   Randall will address the major issues one must consider to ensure that network operations is running smoothly . Black Family Technology Week - Celebrating A Decade of Discovery
The National Black Family Technology Awareness Campaign, will celebrate the tenth annual Black Family Technology Awareness Week (BFTAW), February 10th - 16th, 2008.  BFTAW is a national public awareness campaign designed to encourage more African Americans to incorporate technology into their daily lives. Partners and corporate supporters for this year's campaign include IBM Corporation, EMC, US Navy, Lockheed Martin Corporation, National Black Data Processing Associates and NACME (National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering).  Over the past nine years, more than 200 cities across the country hosted activities that not only assisted communities in getting online but also helped African Americans become more competitive by exploring technologies that will enable them to access and leverage key information from virtually anywhere. Professional and community organizations, including churches, youth groups, schools, clubs, corporations, and senior citizen centers, hosted a variety of programs designed to highlight the potential of new technology. This year's Awareness Week will culminate with the Black Family Technology Empowerment Weekend, to be held at the Baltimore Convention Center as part of the Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference, February 16, 2008, in Baltimore, Md. The event will be hosted by NPR personality Mario Armstrong.

January 2009 has been an exciting month for BDPA-NY volunteers. We thank those members who participated and volunteered at the Wall Street Project, especially the Career Fair. Also a special thanks for those who were able to attend BDPA DC Chapter’s Inaugural Reception.

This year I want everyone to “Dare 2 Share”. We continue to look for volunteers who are interested in volunteering at least 5 hours to share their technical expertise or be a mentor. Education This past Saturday, January 24, was the Kick-off for our 2009 SITES Program. We are happy to report that approximately 15 youths registered for the program. Training will begin next week at Medgar Evers Preparatory High School in Brooklyn. This was an awesome experience as BDPA members got an opportunity to network with those students who may represent New York at our upcoming 2009 Regional Conference. If you are interested in sharing your technical expertise with our youth, please send an email to Denise Hamilton at educ@bdpa-ny.org  .

Sing Harlem Sing! the new musical created by Vy Higginsen and Ken Wydro, is based on Vy's early experiences as a radio personality on WBLS, WWRL and KISS-FM in New York. "Nothing is more stirring and healing than the sound of the human voice singing with energy, enthusiasm and power. The musical production features an emotional blend of Gospel, R&B and Soul music from "back in the day" performed with passion and power by some of the best singers in New York."
